氢气具有抗氧化作用。最近研究发现氢气和富含活性氢的碱性水对许多实验和临床疾病中发挥良好的效果,虽然缺乏氢气的人体长期效应数据,但初步的临床研究发现,氢气对人的代谢综合征、糖尿病、肿瘤放射治疗副作用等均有显著效果。因为氢气可中和毒性自由基,诱导许多抗氧化酶。

该研究推测饮用富含活性氢的碱性水对运动员氧化应激诱导的运动后疲劳有帮助。在这个研究中,作者观察了健康人群运动后血液乳酸水平,尽管缺乏详细的机制研究,但本研究提示,活性氢的碱性水适合作为运动后液体补充。

氧化应激和运动疲劳的关系密切。长跑、短跑、跳跃等剧烈运动可显著增加能量需求和氧气消耗,同时可以增加活性氧和活性氮的生成,这将会打破氧化还原平衡导致氧化应激损伤。

正常情况下,活性氧和活性氮生成速度相对比较低,而且随后被抗氧化系统清除(保持一定水平)。但是当剧烈运动过程中活性氧和活性氮生成速度太高时,超过体内抗氧化系统的清除能力,活性氧和活性氮的浓度就会增加,并导致细胞膜等细胞成分受到伤害,甚至导致细胞坏死,启动肌肉损伤和炎症,这是运动疲劳的一种流行的解释。尽管,系统训练的运动员由于抗氧化系统因适应增强,比普通人更能耐受运动后疲劳和氧化损伤。但缓解剧烈运动后氧化损伤仍被运动员广泛尝试,并有许多文献报道。

在一项研究内,10个年龄21岁的健康足球运动员,进行运动检测后采集血液。受试者没有吸烟者,也没有吃任何药物和营养补充品。每个人都填写了University of Tsukuba的人体研究伦理委员会要求的知情同意书。每个人的体质情况进行记录(年龄、身高、体重、体重指数和最大氧耗量)。他们分别在检测前和检测后喝500毫升,研究结果发现,尽管氢气水对运动员抗氧化能力和氧化损伤的指标没有影响,但可以减少运动疲劳和运动后乳酸增加,作者解释为什么对氧化损伤的作用不显著,是因为这些人都是运动员,本身抗运动应激能力太高。假如用普通人效果会更好。

How Much Water Should You Drink?

Your estimated daily water intake amount can be calculated based on your body weight. Below are some tips to help you find out how much water you should drink every day in order to keep your body sufficiently hydrated to maintaining a better health.  

Your Weight (in pounds) Multiply by 2/3:

Example: 150 pounds x 2/3 =100 ounces (amount of water to drink)

Estimated Water Intake:

1 kg of weight = approximately 43.7 ml of water to drink

1 pound of weight = approximately 0.67 ounces of water to drink

Top up the amount of water intake based on your activity level (approximately 0.4 ounces or 11 ml of water per minute of workout): You may want to adjust that number based on how often you work out, since you are expelling water when you sweat. You should add 12 (about 341 ml) ounces of water to your daily total for every 30 minutes that you work out. So if you work out for 45 minutes daily, you would add 18 (about 511 ml) ounces of water to your daily intake.

Tips: If you make it a habit to drink a glass of water (about 300 ml) every 40 minutes, you can easily drink about 3,000 ml of water by the end of the day. Frequent intake of small amount of water can easily help you achieve your daily needs of water intake. And to gain better health by balancing your body pH and supplying your body with loads of anti-oxidants, you are highly recommended to drink plenty of active hydrogen alkaline water.

Air adalah sumber kehidupan manusia dan seluruh hidupan di muka bumi Allah ini. Tanpa air maka tiadalah sebarang kehidupan yang boleh hidup dan berkembang biak. Besarnya peranan air dalam kehidupan didunia tetapi kita selalu lupa bahawa untuk mendapat kesihatan yang baik maka air yang kita minum setiap hari adalah amat penting untuk menentukan kita mendapat kesihatan yang terbaik.

Semua tamadun manusia adalah bermula berdekatan dengan sumber air. Tanpa air tiadalah manusia hidup di dunia ini. Manusia berasal dari air, sebagaimana firman Allah SWT dalam AlQuran surah Al Insaan , ayat 2:

“Sesungguhnya Kami telah menciptakan manusia daripada setitis air mani yang bercampur yang Kami hendak mengujinya( dengan perintah dan larangan), kerana itu Kami jadikan dia mendengar dan melihat”

Semakin manusia tua, maka  kandungan air dalam tubuh manusia semakin berkurangan. Semasa bayi, kandungan air adalah sehingga 75% air dan semakin dewasa kandungan air menurun kepada 57% dari berat tubuh manusia. Bagi seorang yang mengalami masalah kegemukan , kandungan air berkurang sehingga 45%. Air adalah ‘kunci’ kepada kesihatan yang baik.

Kita selalu tidak kisah dengan air yang kita minum. Kita juga lebih mudah memilih air yang berperisa dan manis bergula apabila kita minum seperti Teh Tarik, Kopi susu, sirap, kordial, jus dan air bergas. Terdapat sesetengah kita yang tidak suka minum air kosong atau air putih atau air mineral dalam kehidupan seharian kita. Air berkarbonat mengandungi kandungan gula yang sangat tinggi menjadi minuman harian kebanyakan kita hari ini. Minuman ‘bertenaga’ yang banyak terdapat dipasaran juga adalah tidak sihat jika diambil selalu kerana kandungan glukosa yang tinggi disamping kandungan ‘kafein’ yang tinggi juga. Lebih malang lagi jika minuman ini diambil tanpa bersenam atau melakukan apa-apa aktiviti sukan. Ia akan menyebabkan masalah kesihatan kemudian hari.

Minum terlalu banyak minuman jus buah-buahan juga adalah tidak sihat kerana kandungan gula ‘fruktosa’ yang tinggi tanpa kebaikan serat yang terdapat dalam buah-buahan. Buah-buahan adalah lebih baik dimakan secara terus. Tabiat sebegini akan mengundang  bahaya kepada kesihatan dalam jangka masa yang panjang.

Air minuman harian seperti teh dan kopi adalah baik untuk kesihatan kerana kandungan anti oksidannya  selagi  diambil secara sederhana dan tidak berlebihan. Masalah utama adalah kandungan gula yang berlebihan dalam minuman ini apabila di jadikan ‘teh tarik’ atau ‘kopi susu’. Kandungan gula dan susu ini menyebabkan kandungan anti oksidan di dalam teh akan hilang.

Air Berfungsi dan Kesihatan

Air yang baik untuk kesihatan juga dipanggil sebagai air berfungsi (functional water). Maksud air berfungsi adalah air yang boleh memberikan kesan kesihatan yang positif. Fungsi utama air dalam tubuh manusia adalah sebagai pelarut, pelincir, pengangkutan zat nutrisi makanan, perkumuhan dan medium tindakan metabolisme sel-sel. Secara umumnya air berfungsi adalah air yang akan membantu dalam proses biologi tubuh manusia. Air juga boleh dikatakan sebagai sumber kesihatan yang baik.

Jumlah air yang diambil juga amat penting, kerana kekurangan air boleh menyebabkan pelbagai jenis penyakit. Jika tubuh manusia kekurangan air atau dehidrasi,  maka ia boleh menyebabkan pelbagai masalah kesihatan yang kronik seperti batu karang buah pingang, kanser saluran kencing, kanser usus dan kanser payu dara.

Dalam satu hadis nabi Muhammad SAW , sabdanya:

“Sebaik-baik air dimuka bumi ini adalah air Zam-Zam, terdapat didalamnya zat makanan dan penyembuh bagi segala penyakit”

Berdasarkan hadis diatas , jelaslah air terbaik untuk kesihatan adalah air Zam-zam. Dari segi sains air zam-zam mengandungi kandungan mineral dengan nisbah yang tepat, yang sangat baik untuk kesihatan. Dengan mengambil kira faktor ini, maka air yang baik untuk kesihatan adalah air mineral asli. Untuk sumber mineral terbaik kepada tubuh manusia , maka mineral daripada sumber air adalah sumber terbaik. Garam mineral seperti kalsium, magnesium, kalium, natrium , zink dan sebagainya amat penting untuk fungsi metabolisma tubuh manusia yang normal. Menurut kajian, air zam-zam adalah ‘air beralkali’ dan mempunyai nisbah kandungan mineral magnesium yang tinggi yang amat baik untuk kesihatan.

Sumber semulajadi air beralkali adalah air ‘zam-zam’, air mata air, air cairan glasier, air gunung dan sebagainya. Air mineral yang dibotolkan dari sumber mata air yang asli dan bukan air tapisan air paip biasanya sedikit beralkali.

Sekarang terdapat pelbagai jenis mesin penapis air yang menghasilkan ‘air beralkali’ dan yang terbaru dipertingkatkan lagi dengan ‘air elektrolisis teroksida beralkali’ yang dijual dipasaran. Air jenis ini biasanya dipasang kepada air paip di singki didapur untuk kegunaan harian seperti air minuman dan masakan. Ramai yang bertanya dengan saya tentang kebaikan dan khasiat air ini kepada kesihatan. Oleh itu saya telah membuat banyak ‘kajian’ dengan membaca pelbagai jurnal perubatan tentangnya.  

Air beralkali adalah air yang mempunyai nilai pH yang lebih dari 7 hingga 10.  Air beralkali didapati lebih berkhasiat kepada kesihatan untuk jangka masa panjang. Terdapat pelbagai kajian terutamanya di negara Jepun, Korea, China dan Russia telah dijalankan untuk mengkaji kesan air beralkali kepada kesihatan. Di Jepun dan Russia telah menggunakan kaedah elektrolisis digabungkan dengan kaedah ‘pemisahan ion’ untuk menghasilkan air berfungsi yang amat baik untuk kesihatan.

Sejak 1966, masyarakat di Jepun telah minum ‘air beralkali berelektrolisis’ yang didapati meningkatkan penyerapan zat kalsium. Di Jepun, Kementerian Kesihatan Jepun telah mengesahkan bahawa dengan minum air beralkali ini akan membantu fungsi usus dan penghadaman, mengurangkan masalah tubuh berasid, masalah cirit-birit kronik dan membantu mencegah pembiakan kuman yang merbahaya. Bagi sesiapa yang mempunyai masalah sembelit dan fungsi usus yang kurang baik, maka dengan minum air beralkali boleh membantu mengurangkan masalah ini.

Kajian terbaru di Jepun juga mendapati pengambilan air beralkali ini akan meningkatkan kesan anti oksidan Vitamin C berbanding dengan pengambilannya dengan air biasa. Kajian lain juga mendapati pengambilan air beralkali mempunyai juga sifat anti oksidan dan melindungi DNA dalam sel dari kesan kerosakan radikal bebas. Kajian mendapati, tikus yang diberi minum hanya air beralkali hidup 30% lebih lama berbanding dengan tikus biasa. Terdapat ahli sains yang berpendapat, air beralkali akan meningkat kekuatan sistem immune atau antibodi manusia dan boleh mencegah penyakit ‘autoimmune’ seperti SLE dan Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Kajian yang dibuat di Jepun yang diterbitkan dalam Journal Trauma tahun 2000, menunjukkan ‘air elektrolisis teroksida beralkali’ boleh digunakan dalam irrigasi rawatan luka akibat melecur terbakar. Ini adalah kerana ianya mempunyai sifat anti bakteria dan mencegah pembiakan bakteria merbahaya P.aeruginosa yang selalu menjangkiti luka melecur terbakar. Dalam satu lagi kajian di University Javeriana, Colombia mendapati air elektrolisis teroksida beralkali boleh merencatkan pembiakan bakteria Listeria sp dalam sayuran dan ia boleh digunakan untuk mencuci sayur-sayuran sebelum di masak atau dimakan. Kajian yang diterbitkan dalam Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology pada tahun 2004 mendapati air elektrolisis teroksida beralkali ini amat baik digunakan untuk mencuci wajah sebagai salah satu rawatan kepada masalah kulit berjerawat kerana sifat anti bakterianya.

Dalam satu kajian oleh Institute of Health Science di University Yonsei, Korea merumuskan bahawa pengambilan ‘air teroksida beralkali’ boleh mempunyai kesan anti kanser kerana sifatnya sebagai anti oksidan. Dalam satu lagi laporan kajian yang dijalankan di lima University di Korea yang dilaporkan dalam Jurnal Bioscience,Biotechnology and Biochemistry pada tahun 2006 menunjukkan pengambilan ‘air teroksidan beralkali’ boleh membantu mengawal paras gula pesakit Diabetis Mellitus (kencing manis) dan masalah kolesterol tinggi dalam darah.

Air paip yang ditidak ditapis mungkin sedikit berasid. Minum air paip tanpa di tapis juga tidak sihat untuk jangkamasa panjang kerana air paip mungkin tercemar dengan pelbagai ampaian, logam berat dan klorin yang berlebihan. Ada ahli perubatan berpendapat bahawa lebihan klorin yang bercampur dengan bahan organik didalam air paip yang dipanaskan akan menyebabkan penghasilan bahan karsinogen. Oleh itu amat penting kita minum air paip yang ditapis dengan pelbagai alat penapisan air yang ada dipasaran. Minum air penapis dengan kaedah osmosis berbalik juga adalah tidak digalakkan untuk jangkamasa panjang kerana ia tidak mengandungi sebarang garam mineral didalamnya disamping ianya sedikit berasid.

Oleh kerana itu, minumlah air mineral atau air paip yang bertapis dan gunakanlah ‘air berfungsi’ seperti ‘air beralkali’ atau ‘air teroksida beralkali’ dalam kehidupan seharian kita. Dengan pengambilan air yang sihat ini maka kesihatan kita akan bertambah baik untuk jangka masa yang panjang.

Treating Symptoms versus Holistic Healing

More often than not, most of us are so used to treating the symptoms of our sickness such as headache, stomach ache and skin allergies by suppressing our discomforts with conventional medications as we are so eager to get rid of those physical discomforts as quickly as possible. And such eagerness has come with a price, not just in monetary term, but the risk of jeopardising our health further with other side effects.

Yet, we have never pause to think what other approaches can be taken to deal with our health issues apart from using conventional medicine. And to be frank, I’m also one of those people who are sceptical about the so-called natural therapies until I met with Dr. Abdul Kader Hussain. From the interview with Dr. Abdul Kader, I have discovered that actually natural therapies help significantly improve one’s health condition. Let’s explore further on what Dr. Abdul Kader has to share about natural therapies from picking the right types of food to drinking the right choice of water.

 From Conventional Medicine to Natural Therapies

“Nowadays, I don’t prescribe conventional medication to my patient anymore,” said Dr. Kader. I couldn’t help but be surprised by his remarks. Indeed, when I glanced around his room, there were shelves packed with natural and organic food supplements such as honey, bee pollen, propolis and flaxseeds, etc., and on top of the table in his treatment room was a portable alkaline water ionizer — an uncommon scene of the doctor’s room that we used to know. 

Trained in conventional medicine since 1972, Dr. Abdul Kader Hussain went to the United States to further his studies in the field of paediatrics, specialising in neonatology (medical care of newborn infants) and perinatology (obstetrics dealing with the care of the foetus and complicated, high-risk pregnancies). Apart from practising conventional medicine as a paediatric, he also gave lectures in university for many years. So what makes this profound doctor who has over 40 years of experience change his treatment approach from conventional medicine to natural therapies?

“There’s no need to be so surprised about it. In fact, I’ve been practising natural therapies for many years ever since I realised that there is no resolution to health problems in conventional medicine which merely treats the symptoms and never attempt to deal with the root cause of the health condition itself,” expressed Dr. Kader. He added, “This has driven me to seek alternative ways to deal with my patients’ health conditions, that is, through natural therapies such as making the right choice of food intake and drinking active hydrogen alkaline water.”  

Who’s the “Culprit” that put your health at risk?

Although we could not exercise much control over the external factors that contaminate our food and water such as environmental pollution, we can actually decide what we want to eat and what we want to drink. Hence, the external factors that affect the quality of our food and water are only part of the “culprit” and we, ourselves, play a vital role as the “real culprit” that put our health at risk!  

Whether we like it or not, we are all given various choices in terms of food intake selection and choices of water quality. But most of the times, we are too ignorant or give ourselves plenty of excuses to not change our unhealthy lifestyle such as smoking and heavy alcohol consumption, and unhealthy eating habits such as taking too much processed food, trans fat and drinking low quality water.

According to Dr. Kader, choosing the right diet helps improve one’s health condition remarkably. “From skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis to chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and obesity, such health conditions can be greatly improved through the change of diet and drinking of alkaline water that foster a higher alkalinity environment in our body which is more favourable for our health,” said Dr. Kader. 

He further explained that high acidic food such as starchy food (e.g. rice, noodles and crackers), dairy products (e.g. cow’s milk, cheese and butter) as well as cooking oil such as corn oil and canola oil, fosters acidic environment in the body which is unfavourable for our health as they promote the growth of bacteria and also aggravate skin allergies and various health problems.

Hence, substituting these foods with the right choice of food can improve your health and even boost your immune system. “For instance, you can replace corn oil or canola oil with palm oil or virgin coconut oil in cooking. Substitute cow’s milk with goat’s milk, and swap white or brown sugar with Stevia (sweetener/ sugar substitute extracted from the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana) or palm sugar (Gula Melaka),” suggested Dr. Kader.

“Most people tend to have the misperception that food such as cow’s milk and chicken eggs are good for health. Actually, they aren’t. In fact, goat’s milk is a much better choice as compared to cow’s milk because the compound of goat’s milk is very similar to human breast milk,” explained Dr. Kader. “Chicken eggs often aggravate skin allergies and they are best replaced with duck or turkey eggs which provide good quality protein and beta carotene, and yet they won’t aggravate allergic conditions,” added Dr. Kader.

Apart from the right choice of food, cooking method also plays a crucial role in retaining the food nutrients. “It’s best to eat vegetables raw and cook food in low heat such as steaming instead of deep frying or toasting to retain the nutrients,” recommended Dr. Kader.

Q: Can you share with us some of the main reasons that make you encourage your patients to drink ionized alkaline water?

Dr Norman: Water is one of the key for a good health. Water is the medium for optimum metabolisms of the cells in the body and also it acts a carrier of nutrients in the body. Consuming good and healthy water is the key for excellent health. Since there are many scientific studies that shows alkaline water has positive beneficial effects for health in short term and long term use, therefore I encourage my patients to drink ionized alkaline water.

Q: How does ionized alkaline water benefit one’s health?

Dr Norman: Ionized alkaline water is also called as functional water. Functional water is the water that give positive beneficial effects to one health. Main functions of water in the body is its acts as solvent, lubricant, carrier of nutrients, disposal of waste products and medium for cells metabolism. Generally, functional water will helps in the optimal biological process of human body and it is the key for excellence health. This functional water enhanced the immune system and inhibited autoimmune disease. 

Q: It is said that regular intake of ionized alkaline water would provide an effective anti-aging effect. What is your opinion about such claim?

Dr Norman: I agree with the statement. Regular intakes of ionized alkaline water will hydrate the body and also provide anti-oxidants effects as evidence by studies. Good hydration will give anti-aging effects and anti-oxidants properties of the water will protect the skin cells from free radicals damage. This protection from free radicals will have positive anti-aging effect. Clinical studies have shown that mice fed electrolyzed alkaline water lived 30% longer.

Q: A great number of studies found that alkaline water plays a significant role in terms of anti-oxidants. Is it true and why?

Dr Norman: Yes, it’s true. Recent studies shows that electrolyzed-reduced water with high pH and significant negative redox potential (ORP) was shown to have SOD-like activity and catalase-like activity, and thus, scavenge active oxygen species and protect DNA from damage by oxygen radicals in vitro. Other studies have shown that electrolyzed water produces antioxidant behaviour and protects DNA from free radical damage.

Q: It is said that the intake of ionized alkaline water also helps in the prevention of chronic health conditions as well as improving all degenerative diseases. What is your opinion about such claims?

Dr Norman: Recent research in Japan has shown that electrolyzed alkaline drinking water has a synergistic effect on antioxidants. For example, the antioxidant strength of vitamin C in electrolyzed alkaline water is several times greater than vitamin C in tap water. The synergistic effect is due to the higher dissociation/ionization constant of the functional water. Studies have shown that ionized alkaline water produces antioxidant behaviour and protects DNA from free radical damage.  Due to this property, alkaline water and its anti-oxidants effects, its helps to protect the cells from free radicals damages and prevent degenerative diseases.
